On the New Puzzle Format

If you’ve been with me since the Lantern and Lens Society days, this month marks my first real step into a more sustainable format.

Previously, each puzzle set followed a small narrative that unfolded as you moved from one puzzle to the next. That structure has now been set aside. These puzzles are no longer narrative-driven and can be solved in any order.

Instead, each set is built around a familiar mystery trope. You already know the scene, and the puzzles invite you to explore puzzling occurrences rather than solve a mystery.

If you love murder mystery as much as I do, you might enjoy my word search book featuring 42 classic tropes, formatted for 8.5×11 printing and e-ink tablets. Available for download on Etsy.

This month I experimented with creating a multi-page maze puzzle. I have been curious for quite some time about how a puzzle like this might work, so I was pleased to finally give it a proper try.

Last month’s poll ended in a tie between a secret rendezvous and a missing pet, and this puzzle set takes a little inspiration from both. It is also influenced by puzzle legend Lewis Carroll, best known for writing Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Beyond his stories, Carroll had a deep interest in logic, wordplay, and chess, and he created puzzles for children in his family, including a pencil maze published in his family magazine, Mischmasch.

Rather than steering solvers with dead ends, the paths in Carroll’s maze loop and reconnect, sometimes leading you back to where you began. There are multiple correct routes, with fewer immediate signals about whether a choice is leading you forward or simply around in circles.

In my puzzle set, I leaned into this idea. The maze pages include loops instead of dead ends, and the set also includes symbol matching, a sentence unscramble, and a classic Knight and Knave style logic puzzle, complete with talking animals, in true Lewis Carroll fashion.

If you are not familiar with them, kriss krosses are similar to crosswords, but without clues. You are given a list of words to fit into a crossword-style grid. I enjoy this format because traditional crosswords often rely on very specific trivia, which can feel excluding. I like puzzles that invite you in and let you practice focus and thinking without needing to know anything in advance.

Why Cozy Mystery Puzzles Matter to Me

I love the idea of solving puzzles as part of a mystery story. For me, combining puzzles with narrative creates a deeper level of engagement. It asks you to actively participate, which feels especially refreshing. I love reading too, but puzzles invite a different kind of focus that feels more restorative.

Over the past seven months, I have really enjoyed creating the cozy mystery puzzle sets I’ve shared with you, especially having you help choose what I create each month. They are also time-intensive to make, and I have found it hard to keep them up on a monthly schedule alongside regular life. For now, I am taking a pause from new cozy mystery puzzle sets while I figure out a more sustainable way to create them.

In the meantime, I will continue sending out large print puzzles each month and asking what you would like to solve next. A Real Rebus Puzzle Challenge from 1913

I learned two things while putting together this month’s puzzle set. First, puzzle contests were very popular in the early 1900s. Second, weekly rebus puzzles were commonly included in newspapers during that time. If you are not familiar with a rebus puzzle, it is a visual word riddle, and honestly, I find the historic ones quite tough.

This month, the investigation into the historic Meriwether–Whitlock feud continues. With your help, the Lantern & Lens Society is still piecing together what caused the rift between Hidden Creek’s two founding families. All signs point to what must have been a very turbulent Ice Cream Social in the summer of 1882.

If you missed the beginning, last month’s puzzle set, The Village with Two of Everything, uncovered early clues about the families’ once-close partnership and the extent of their ruptured relations. Iris Bellamy, age 92 and the last living descendant of both families, offered to fund repairs to the village’s twin bridges if someone could uncover the cause of the long-standing feud. Naturally the Lantern & Lens Society answered the challenge.

This new puzzle set begins with a handwritten invitation to the gathering itself. It promised an afternoon of ices, croquet, and cheerful company. What could have happened at such a festive occasion to leave a mark so lasting that signs of the divide are still visible in Hidden Creek 150 years later?

This cozy mystery features a variety of puzzles: a missing letter, a word search, a sentence scramble, a light logic puzzle, and fill-in-the-blanks. It is a delightfully tangled chapter of Victorian offenses, from etiquette breaches to rising indignation, and one very lost apology letter. Enjoy!

What’s Next for the Lantern & Lens Society?

I had a lot of fun digging into the nitty-gritty of Victorian croquet for this month’s cozy mystery. To my surprise, the game caused quite a stir in its day. Mark Twain once called croquet “ineffably insipid”. At the same time, critics worried the game encouraged flirtation and impropriety. There were even reports of women gently nudging the ball into a better position using the hems of their skirts. Scandalous!

Next month is Halloween, and I’ve been looking forward to creating a spooky puzzle set all year. But I haven’t settled on a theme yet—so I’m turning to you, my puzzle solvers.

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I’m really enjoying creating these mixed puzzle sets with a cozy mystery twist. My hope is to shift more of my activity book efforts toward longer mystery-style projects after I finish the tracing book I’m currently working on.

Like most creative things, it’s going slower than I imagined. I’m so eager to start developing larger, story-driven puzzle books, but I also want the tracing book to be something I’m truly proud of. About This Puzzle

This is the fourth in a series of multi-page puzzle narratives I’ve started calling Cozy Puzzle Collections, a little side project that’s become one of my favorite things to make. These stories blend logic, deduction, and observation puzzles with just a hint of mystery and atmosphere.

Victorian Language of Flowers

Inspired by this, I’ve created a new large print word search puzzle book titled Victorian Blooms, where you’ll learn the hidden meanings behind some of the Victorians' most cherished flowers. In the Victorian era, flowers were a language unto themselves, used to convey secret messages. Each bloom carried its own unique sentiment: for example, the snowdrop spoke of hope, while the columbine hinted at folly.

Here we are in chilly February—a month best known for Valentine’s Day. But beyond the hearts and chocolates, there’s another day worth celebrating in this short, often bleak month: February 17—Random Acts of Kindness Day!

Believe it or not, I’ve spent quite a bit of time thinking about acts of kindness—because in 2024, I created a 100 Acts of Kindness Word Search. Each puzzle highlights a different act of kindness, designed as a fun, proactive way to spread goodness in a world where it’s all too easy to dwell on the negative. But as I worked on it, I realized something surprising—my favorite acts of kindness aren’t random or anonymous.

The ones that stick with me most are the thoughtful, heartfelt gestures that meet someone exactly where they are—like making a cup of tea for a distressed friend or supporting someone’s dream, even if it’s something you’d never pursue yourself. Those small moments of understanding and care—they’re the ones that make all the difference.

So, in honor of Random Acts of Kindness Day, I’m including two puzzles from my 100 Acts of Kindness Puzzle Book in this month’s free puzzle PDF. I hope they bring you a little joy—and maybe even inspire a kindness or two.

How Well Do You Remember Classic TV?

I’m excited to introduce my latest puzzle book—The Nostalgic Television Word Search! This collection includes 125 puzzles with 4,000 unique words, each featuring a classic television show from the 20th century.

Creating this book was a rewarding experience. Looking at the different eras of television history revealed so much about how entertainment reflects the culture and values of its time. It was a fun way to dive deeper into the past and gain a better understanding of the present.

This book continues my Nostalgic Word Search series, following The Nostalgic Book Club Word Search. If you’re a fan of classic TV, you’ll enjoy revisiting your favorite shows while solving these puzzles!
